Who am I kidding, on the threat of snow I become a shut in.
Last Thursday, I woke up to a blanket of snow covering every piece of ground God gave us. That day my grade 5er and I were going to go on a field trip to the Orchestra. An exertion he was not looking forward to already. He has gone in years past and we can always go again in the spring, but he would have to go with his sister then. I scanned the sky looking for hope that it may let up so we can go. The sky resembled the ground, pure white except with little twinkles dancing around it.
The natural ownership of the report cards have always been the kids. The work is theirs that they either do or do not, and do well or do poorly. But since now I am their primary teacher does that change this?
Last week I handed another thick folder of work for each of my children just in time for the teacher to do the report cards. Which she did this past week. But I wonder now, if my children get a low grade would that be because I didn’t do a good job teaching them?
when we home learn our children?
My children are enrolled in a school with a home learners program that has an optional 2 day a week program. With that they get the same notices as all the kids at the school, including the Pro D notices. My children see and read these notices before I get a glimpse at them. With a ‘YAY Pro D Friday’ they dance around crazy. The thing is they do not go to the school in Fridays; they go on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
My son took that pic, he nearly drowned while doing so.
HAH! Just kidding. This photo was taken at the Capalano Fish Hatchery where they have large glass windows to view of salmon going upstream to lay their eggs. A truly amazing sight. When we took our kids there, my husband while reading something or rather on the wall fell behind us. When he caught up he was met with me going ‘OMG OMG you gotta take a look at this!’ and running back and forth from him to the windows. I have to say, watching fish jump upstream takes all adult out of us. My children were running back and forth from each window trying to fallow a the fish up. We must of spent a half an hour watching these salmon jump. I am so glad we went during a weekday when the place well mostly empty. We were able to explore each very cool part taking our sweet time at each place.
Never mind the ‘Big One’ that I have been preparing for since I was a child. Never mind hurricane force November winds. Never mind a pipe bursting in my unit before Christmas (never happened yet). These disasters can’t hold a candle to a renovation while home schooling my children. Imagine dust, nails on the windowsill, brooms lying in wait across the floor and music blaring throughout the barren rooms, now try teaching math in the middle of all of this.
I was told by my neighbour that I could use our community hall to teach the kids while we do the renovations, I said ‘oh it really shouldn’t a problem’. Doh! Was I ever naive! Or stupid! Whichever you prefer.
Well after here a blog, there a blog on blogspot I thought I would try this new blog of mine on WordPress. I have been hearing about it for a long time now but thought I was happy at blogspot. I am happy there for sure! But my curiosity got the best of me. This is my new blog. VIOLET! My first post done and it has nothing to do with my blog. For ‘google rankings’ shame! I know, but I don’t care at the moment. I still need to poke around wordpress and see what I can do. Maybe I might find a way to get rid of the green colour on the ribbon. That would be great! Would save me sometime finding another header picture. Time is what I do not have. I am 33 and I feel the weeks disappear every time I blink. Well it looks like it is time to eat dinner, then put the kids to bed, spend sometime with my husband, then worry for my teenage son to come home safe from his date, then sleep. Finally.
Kids at PNE
Here they are! My two home learners! I got a third, but he is a teenager so was out with his girlfriend this day. He also is not home schooled or ever has been. I have come into home schooling educated at what the public system is about. I hold no grudge against it at all aside from the normal every year complaints: no money for this that and the other thing that is important to the school, the teachers are way under supported, the yearly threat that the teachers will go on strike and/or that the school will be closed down ect. All of which does add up to a tiny part of why I am home schooling – well partly home schooling. These two go to school two days a week for half the day. The teacher supports all different aspects of the kids curriculum as well as their social development. She also supports me and answers my many questions.Which is why this blog is called ‘The Other Teacher’.
