Report Card Demon

Meet my report card demon.

His name is ‘donotwanttothinkaboutit’. It means ‘bad thing’ in some obscure hidden mountain dialect that was passed down to me by my mother.

 

On Thursday, December 16TH I, a home learning mom, woke up with the piercing knowledge of what that day is.  I pulled and dragged myself out of the safety of my blankets and tiptoed out of my room. Out. A very unfriendly word to me that day because I knew that there will me another ‘out’. An ‘out’ that will actually be ‘out’ in the elements. In the world. To be seen. To hear. To see. To hear. And most frightfully….to read.

Who does the report cards belong to when you are the teacher?

The natural ownership of the report cards have always been the kids. The work is theirs that they either do or do not, and do well or do poorly. But since now I am their primary teacher does that change this?

Last week I handed another thick folder of work for each of my children just in time for the teacher to do the report cards. Which she did this past week. But I wonder now, if my children get a low grade would that be because I didn’t do a good job teaching them?
